The ultimate checklist for your last day at a company

The ultimate checklist for your last day at a companyThe ultimate checklist for your last day at a companyTheres something nostalgic - yet bittersweet - about leaving a job that has fundamentally changed your career for the better. We often tie our identities to our careers, so when your last day at a company comes around, its possible to feel like youre losing part of who youve become. But leaving on a high notereallycomes down to staying organized in the weeks leading up to your end date.So in the spirit of my last day here as a Ladders News reporter, I wanted toshare a checklist with you that might be useful for your final day at a company.Start by making sure youre well restedThis can make all the difference, especially when you have a lot on your plate.Instead of overcompensating for exhaustion bygetting just enough sleep the night before your final day, aim toget a solid eight hours for several nights in a row.Youll enjoy feeling more alert than usual.Wear something you adoreTh is will give you the extra confidence you need to get through your last day. Itll also feel like more of an occasion.Wearing something you love can also impact how youre feeling and how well you perform at work, so why not set yourself up for success?Give yourself more than enough time to get to the officeTheres nothing worse than rushing to work before the day even begins. So give yourself the gift of time - and lots of it. Youll feel a whole lot better on your commute if delays pop up, but youre already running early. Having an external charger, water, and a snack in your bag can also be a big help.Begin clearing out your desk in advanceYour last day at a company should be all about sailing through your remaining workload and leaving on great terms with your team - not shoving books, folders, and papers into an extra bag at high speed. If you start clearing your desk the week before your last day, youll give yourself more time to tote fewer things home over a multi-day period. Thi s way, youll also be less mentally and physically weighed down on your commute, and can carry a lighter, smaller bag to work on your last day.If possible, set a goal of totally clearing out your workspace by the day before your exit.Save your workWhatever you do, save your work. After all, the internet might not actually be forever Work hosted online can evaporate into thin air, leaving you without anything to show for the time you put in at work.If you have to bring in your hard drive to save a bunch of files, do it. If youd rather save digital copies on the Google Drive linked to your personal Gmail account, do it. Youll quickly find out that PDFs are your best friend.Trust me, its worth the effort - even if you have to start well before your last few days.Make sure youve already spoken to HR about tying up loose endsMaybe you have questions about your existing 401(K) plan, or how long you have until your company insurance plan cuts off.Its super important to have HR fill you in on specifics like these before youre out the door for the last time. Also, hold onto any important documents you might need in the future.Pay attention to the feedback you get in your exit interviewWhether its good or bad, you can use it as a springboard for the next chapter in your career. As you continue to develop your strengths, really hone in on your weaknesses and see how much you grow professionally over time.Your manager might even be willing to give you a recommendation down the line, so dont burn any bridges with them at the end of your time working together.Let your colleagues know how they can reach youWhether you make your general announcement to the company via email, on Slack, or using another method, saying goodbye to your coworkers makes it clear that you appreciate the time you spent working with them. Its also a reminder that even after youre gone, youll still be someone who they can reach out to. So be sure to save the contact information of coworkers youve become close with.Celebrating with your team over an in-office treator going out for drinks with them can also help create positive, lasting memories.Hand in your work ID card and other materialsDepending on where you work, you might have to hand in your ID badge, and/or laptop if you use one. Be sure to follow any instructions you receive from your manager, or from your HR department.Wishing you the best of luck in the next stage in your career

Learn how to love those on-the-job haters in the office

Learn how to love those on-the-job haters in the officeLearn how to love those on-the-job haters in the officeSelf-Assessment Quiz True or FalseI am a genuine person at work.I give praise wherbeie praise is due, and I dont try to steal others thunder.I listen more than I talk.I am engaging and open with my co-workers.Last week I talked about how important it is for you to love what you do. Well, that got me to thinkin about on-the-job haters because haters could be a for-sure deterrent that keeps you from loving where you work.Ive had some amazing jobs that could have been ruined by a hater or two had I let them. And no matter how much I may have answered TRUE to the questions above, there were still people who didnt like me (Gasp IKR? Unthinkable) But, one thing I know for sureAnd its only a matter of time, if youve avoided them thus far in your career, before you run into one. So its better I send you out into the world prepped to handle them with aplomb. (Yes, as always, you can thank me later).Youre going to have haters at work either because youre new, youre old, or you do too good a job. These are silly reasons, but NOT to the hater. Also, these are reasons that are really out of your control, right? I mean the crux of the matter is that haters hating on you is rarely about you, and often about them and their insecurities. You cant help being the new person. You cant help having been kept on for the long haul because youre fabulous. And you certainly wont stop doing great, praise-worthy work. What you can do is be aware of the flavor of hater-ade your hater is sipping on.Do your homework. Does the hater give everyone a huff and a side eye, or is the venom laser focused on just you? If its everyone, then the hater could be suffering from one of two maladies they arent quite comfortable in their own skin, doing what they do, so like a drowning man they want to pull you under with them by criticizing everything you do. Or, they are just unhappy in their wor k environment. (Read last weeks post on not loving what you do If you stay around too long in a job you hate, YOU could become this type of hater. So GET OUT)If shes only throwing shade your way, you have to up your wattage in her direction.Take some extra time to talk to her, like while getting coffee in the break room together or before that conference call starts. Yes, I said TALK TO THE HATER Genuinely. Get to know who she is. What her likes are. What she does outside the office. How she spends her free time. How she got started. So that she, in turn, can get to know you, too. She may see that youre not the haughty know-it-all that shes pegged you to be, but rather a kind, strong, and smart person. And you might learn that she was passed over for your job THREE times. So its not you per se shes hating on, just the fact that you got the job shes been hankering for.Inclusion also works well for dealing with certain haters. If youre used to batting things out of the park solo, mayb e take a few side steps to allow him in by seeking him out specifically for his opinion or direction. Free up your thinking. Haters have good ideas, too, but you have to be open and receptive to hearing them. Up your team-player skills just a notch. That may be enough for this hater to really start lovin some you. (Or at least, hating you a bit less.)The jealous-monger haters are the worst kind of haters. They want to be YOU. But they dont have the skill set, tenacity, charisma, or capacity TO BE you. And even worse, they dont have the desire to put in the work thats needed to be you. So, they try to take shortcut claims to your fame, like taking your ideas and announcing them as their own or attaching their name (and sometimes photo) to work that youve done. They get the acclaim without having put in the sweat equity that you and your team put in.Like body snatchers, these smile-in-your-face haters may fool some of the people some of the time with their clone-like behavior, but not for long. When things youve handled smoothly suddenly start falling through the cracks, when deadlines are constantly missed, when your hater goes MIA for undefined periods of time, people will notice. And the beauty of dealing with haters like this? You often wont have to say a word. Others will out them for you So, if your haters are just hating because they arent, well you, do NOT ever hide your shine so they can feel better about themselves. You just keep being you.Always be kind. Always be helpful. And always keep loving what you do. No hater can take that away from you unless you allow them to.Cheryl Grace is the sassy aunt, best friend, and mentor youve always needed in your life. Manipulating a Sales Resume

Manipulating a Sales ResumeManipulating a Sales ResumeResume-formatting methods to help highlight yur strengthsJack Smith welches a very successful regional account manager in the pharmaceutical industry. In developing a new resume, we needed a strategy for the content and for the formatting. Combined, the resume can now draw hiring managers eyes from the most important to the most basic information. Manipulating a resume to read how you want it to is critical. To sell the most important points in Jacks resume, we leveraged a variety of formatting tools Between the time we received the original and when we delivered the final version of the resume, everything was formatted specifically to highlight some elements of Jacks career and understate others.Job One, though, was getting the content right.I dont always want to call out job movement, but the last two positions Jack had had were eliminated by acquisition or closure. I included this directly under the company names. He lost those jobs because of structural changes in the organizations, certainly not because of performance. This information answers potential questions before they are asked. After the text was written, we began using our formatting strategy by visually separating out the basic information contact details, core competencies and education. This clearly established different sections on the resume. With the basic information minimized but easy to find, we started prioritizing the rest of the content. Everything was designed to draw the readers attention to the most relevant information.Jack wanted to stay in the pharmaceutical field and was looking for a position that was similar to his last. So job titles were bolded and put in italics. A quick look at his job history makes it clear that he has had similar positions throughout his career and can therefore hit the ground running. His employers also had well-recognized names. Because he intended to stay in the same field, the names were highlighted w ith double bars. If Jack intended to look for work outside this industry, I would not have highlighted the company names so clearly. And while we wanted to emphasis the previous employers names, we could minimize the company descriptions with an 8-point font size.In reservierung of importance, we were atHeadline (12-point font, bolded and upper case)Previous Employers (12-point font and upper case)Job Titles (10-point font, bolded and italicized)In sales, the next big hitter is quantifiable results. In Jacks field, formal recognition is important. So the word recognition was bolded and left-justified as a way to draw in the readers attention. Jack had consistently outperformed his colleagues for more than 10 years, and I wanted to make sure that was clearly understood. Many resumes for sales professionals just show the measurable results via different types of performance metrics, such as percentages over quota, Presidents Club, Account Manager of the Year, and so on. The text for eac h job was fully justified with no more than four lines. But that would not tell the reader how Jack actually achieved those results. We used bullets to highlight specific accomplishments and didnt mix them with the job duties. Accomplishments lose impact if presented in a hail of bullets indeed a resume should typically include fewer than six bullets.SummaryAfter you have clarified what you want to say in your resume, consider what you want to do with formatting. Judicious use of bolding, italics, shading, borders, margins, font sizes and bullets can highlight what is most important and de-emphasize the rest. However, dont get carried away, because then the resume will look cluttered rather than streamlined. For example, the original resumes font was a 10-point Garamond, which is hard to read. Some lines were gray instead of black (for no particular reason). The content under each job was dense and in paragraph form. The left margin was very wide, and the right margin looked ragged. I t was not easy for the eye to scan, so streamlined it all in the final resume.Though there are no definitive rules about whats acceptable, here are quick tips so that you avoid the same situationMargins I prefer to justify the text fully for a nice, clean look. The information on education at the bottom of the resume can be left- and right-justified as a space-saving technique, as shown in Jacks after resume.Fonts It is a question of style preference. For Jacks resume, I used Arial 10-point font because it is widely accepted and easy to read. Other possibilities includeTahomaVerdanaGaramondTimes New Roman. (Use 11-point font if you like Times New Roman.)Remember, some of us wear bifocals, so please make it easy. When you think you are done with the resume, step back and give it another review to just look at formatting. And if you ask someone else to review it as well, ask for feedback on both content and presentation.

4 Mistakes Youre Allowed to Make in Your Career - The Muse

4 Mistakes Youre Allowed to Make in Your Career - The Muse4 Mistakes Youre Allowed to Make in Your CareerYou know the term rookie mistake and you know that when youre new at something, youll stumble and fall a few times as you learn. But, the permission to make mistakes in the name of learning fades away as you gain mora experience. You move into the category where youre supposed to know better. And while yes, getting it right is always a good goal there are four mistakes youre allowed to make no matter how much experience you have. 1. Caring Too MuchYou know its important to make time for your life outside the office. And ideally, as you grow in your career, youll get better at achieving work-life balance (or integration). But, you might hit a moment in your career when you cant leave at 5 PM or really leave work at work at all. Your time- and thoughts- are consumed by your job.Maybe its helping you cope with a tough time. Or maybe putting in those extra hours is whats needed to brin g your company- or your career trajectory- to the next level. For whatever reason, youve consciously chosen to make work the 1 priority in your life.Back-burnering the rest of your life isnt ideal and without a doubt, it isnt sustainable, either. But its not always the wrong thing to do. If theres a clear finish line- and a clear payoff- then pouring yourself into your work may be a mistake worth making (even if you know better).2. Trying Something Bold (and Failing)With experience comes a sense of your strengths and weaknesses. You have a pretty good idea of how you work best and how to manage whats on your plate so you can be successful. But if you keep following the same, proven formula, you could end up trapped in your comfort zone. Growth is uncomfortable, and challenging yourself means you may make a mistake- and even fail but youll also never know just what you achieve unless you push yourself. So, the next time youre about to do something the way youve always done it consider how you might approach it differently. You dont have to change every routine and build in inefficiencies for the sake of saying you tried something new, but do encourage yourself to take a risk.3. Blowing Off Your Five-Year PlanFive-year plans can be really clarifying. In fact, picturing where youd like to be in five years can help you if youre not exactly sure what to do next in your career. And while it may seem like a mistake to change course (or, careers) mid-stream, sometimes, its the very best thing for you. Maybe it took you some time to realize you didnt just need a new job, but youd actually like to change industries. Or, maybe youve been putting off launching a side gig, or even going on sabbatical. It could be that taking steps toward your new goal means youll miss the mark on your earlier ones.Thats OK. It may take you longer to achieve your new definition of success, but you know youll be happier when you get there. 4. Putting Your Faith in OthersEspecially if youve bee n burned by a teammate who didnt pull their weight, it can seem like a mistake to hand over the reins ever again. Maybe youre gun-shy about delegating after things werent done to specifications. Or maybe you leistungspunkt your ascent to going it alone, or you just thrive on working independently. In any of these scenarios, depending on others can feels more like a horrible idea than a leap of faith. After all, you cant control what might happen with a project you dont wholly own. But, as a reminder, thats actually a good thing. People think and work differently, but thats a benefit (hence the term strength in numbers). The fact that a project wont completely stall because you need a sick day is a good thing. Being able to step away from your computer (ever) is a good thing. Learning from others and following someone elses good ideas- and even, on occasion, following a less-efficient idea and see that the department doesnt crumble to the ground- these are all good things. As humans, we re bound to make mistakes. And while trying to avoid them is a good goal, a better one is to stop viewing all mistakes as a complete failure, and vow to learn from them instead.

Standard Commercial Lease Terms

Standard Commercial Lease TermsStandard Commercial Lease TermsBefore you sign a commercial lease spend time reading every word. Ask for clarification from a lawyer or knowledgeable disinterested party if you do leid understand a term in the lease. Relying on the landlord or a listing agent to explain their lease is not a great idea because they could mislead you intentionally, or may not understand the lease themselves. Complete a Walk-Through Before you sign a lease, do a walk-through of the property. Make note of anything wrong that you need the landlord to repair or upgrade. If there is any existing damage to the property, photograph it so you will not be accused of or charge for the damage when you vacate the space. Repairs Have the landlord do repairs before you sign a lease. If work (i.e., upgrades) is to be done after you take occupancy, this should be detailed in the lease, including work completion times. You do not want a landlord to make promises and then have your business shut down for weeks at a time because of ongoing work. Conditions and Stipulations Checklist When you have negotiated thoroughly and are truly ready to sign a lease, I repeat my previous advice read every single word. Be sure the lease contains at least all of the following information (it may help you to check items off this list as you read the lease) Landlord Name and contact information, or the name of the company representing the landlord. Who you make the agreement with affects your legal remedies if there are any problems.Name of the person or company leasing the space (you). If the lease is in your name, you will be personally responsible for the terms of the lease.Lease start date and duration. notenzeichen Do not sign a five-year lease if at all possibleDeposit amount required and if it is refundable. Will you have to pay cleaning or painting fees when you vacate? If so, how much? Monthly rent, including how much you will pay, how it is calculated, and what i t does and does not cover.Additional fees you might have to pay (percentage of profits, parking lot maintenance - anything you might have to pay on top of the monthly rent). When rent is due and how it can be paid (i.e., mailing address or in person).Late fees (how much and when they are imposed). What if the payment due date falls on a Sunday?Insurance required at lease signing and for the duration of the lease. Is there anyone that will have the right to access your property without your permission? If so, who and under what circumstances? Unless your lease specifically states that you can sublease or share the space with another business, you cannot. If you need to sublease it must be stated in your lease that you have this right.Renewal terms. How much (usually a percent increase) will your rent increase if you renew and will you have to sign another lease for a certain period of time? Most landlords offer a renewal period for the same terms as theoriginal lease (i.e., if you sign a two-year lease, your renewal option would be for another two years). Spell out any work you plan to do to upgrade or repair the space in the lease - some landlords will give you credit for the work you do, but it must be approved work. Others will not allow you to do any work unless you use the landlords contractors.Landlord promises. If it is not written into your lease you may have problems. Proving lease terms were agreed to in an oral contract can be almost impossible.Any other terms that you have demanded are part of the lease agreement. Understand Your Lease If any of the above items are missing from the lease, ask that they are written into the lease before you sign And, it cannot be emphasized strongly enough if you do not understand every term in a lease agreement, do not sign it until you do.

Dont Get Creative With Your Resume

Dont Get Creative With Your Resume Dont Get Creative With Your Resume Well, guess what? Its not going to work. Its time to stop fooling around with your resume and stick to the tried and true.U.S. News World Report published an interestingarticle on the subject. The problem with this strategy, the article says is that hiring managers can see right through the most common resume tricks, and using them will usually backfire on you. Here are some of the tricks it suggests avoiding and why1. Using a functional resume instead of a chronological resume to hide weaknesses in your work history.According to the article, employers knowjob seekers use functional resumes to hide gaps in their work history. Funnily enough, this commonly suggested trick is little mora than a red flag for most employers.2. Shortening your resume by shrinking the margins and font instead of cutting content.Employers are aware of this strategy, too. All it shows them is that you dont know how to edit your work prop erly.3. Leaving dates off your resume to avoid age discrimination. Dates of employment are such a standard part of resumes that employers will notice if you dont include them.U.S. News World Report compares leaving dates off of your resume to leaving the house without your pants. On her blog, job coach Susan Ireland says, As a general rule, you dont need to go back more than 10 years however, if its to your benefit, you may go back further. In order to decide how far back you should, Ireland suggests asking yourself a few questions, including How old do you want to appear on your resume? and How relevant are your earlier lokalitts to your job objective?. You can read the full list on her blog.4. Littering your resume with keywords to get by resume-screening software.U.S. News World Report says that a significant number of companies dont even use resume-screening software especially smaller companies so this trick is generally useless. If the company does use resume-screening softw are, theres a good chance theyll find you, even without the barrage of keywords provided youre qualified for the position in the first place.5. Using a fancy or unusual resume design to stand out and catch the hiring managers eye.U.S. News World Report says that unusual resume designs sacrifice content for flash. Hiring managers dont want flash they want easily accessible, relevant information.Thisreminds me of a kid at my college. He put his resumes on grocery bags. His tagline was, Im so willing to work for you I would brown-bag it every day. It seemed clever, but nobody knew exactly what the heck he was talking about. Nobody could figure out what packing your lunch had to do with landing a career.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Take our Recruiter Certification Program today. Trudeau Do you want to win an argument or change the world

Trudeau Do you want to win an argument or change the worldTrudeau Do you want to win an argument or change the worldBelow is the transcript (and video) of Justin Trudeaus commencement speech to NYUs Class of 2018Bonjur tout le monde Merci et flicitationsI am very happy to be here with you today, deeply honored. Thank you for that kind introduction, Niobe. Andy, its wonderful to landbinnensee you again. I am so grateful for the honor you and NYU have given me today. Now, you know - you may notlage know, but Andrew is an honorary Canadian and British Columbian because, like me, he studied at the University of British Columbia back in the day. It makes me proud that Canada was parte of Andrews formation, just as NYU has helped form so many amazing Canadians, including two members of my own staff.Im actually told that 180 of the NYU class of 2018 are Canadians. Hello Welcome, my friendsI have to say, to be here now, speaking with all of you - in Yankee Stadium, one of the greatest plac es in one of the greatest cities on Earth - is more than a little humbling. My friends, you are now NYU graduates - the best and the brightest. You have great potential and possibilities. And therefore, you have enormous responsibility, too. So today, Id like to talk about the nature of both those things, and Id like to offer you a challenge. One that I think is essential for yur future success as individuals, and as the leaders that you are becoming.Itscommencement seasonFollow LaddersCommencement Addresses magazine on Flipboardto watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past.Among the many things I admire about NYU, is that about a fifth of the students are international. And a similar proportion are the very first in their families to go to college. This group is truly diverse in every possible way. And I think that is an extraordinarily valuable and important thing. When I graduated in the early 1990s, I went on a trip around the world with a few good friends - who actually remain good friends to this day, which is sort of a miracle. We trekked and traveled, mostly over land, from Europe to Africa to Asia. And that remains one of the great formative experiences of my life. It was an amazing adventure. It was also a really important contributor to my continued, broader education. Because it forced me, really for the first time as an adult, to meet, engage, befriend people whose views and experiences, ideas, values and language were very different from my own. When a kid from Montreal meets a Korean fisherman living in Mauritania, befriends a Russian veteran of their Afghan war, or a shopkeeper and his family living in Danang, interesting conversati ons always happen. Now, maybe some of you have talked about doing something like a great trip like that after graduation. But Id be willing to bet one of the first things you heard was a warning You cant do that in this day and age. Its not safe But heres my question Is it really just the issue of physical safety that makes our loved ones so anxious at the idea of us getting out there, or is it the threat that if we look past our frames - the frames of our own lives, of our own communitys structured values and belief systems - to truly engage with people who believe fundamentally different things, we could perhaps be transformed into someone new and unfamiliar to those who know and love us?See, theres no question that todays world is more complex than it was in the mid-1990s. There are serious and important problems that we are grappling with and will continue to grapple with. But we are not going to arrive at mutual respect, which is where we solve common problems, if we cocoon ou rselves in an ideological, social or intellectual bubble. Now, we can see it all around us - theres a peculiar fascination with dystopia in our culture today. You see it everywhere on film and TV, but the truth is that, on balance, we have the good fortune to live in a time of tremendous possibility and potential a time when it is within our grasp to eliminate extreme poverty, to end terrible diseases like malaria and TB, and to offer a real chance at an education to everyone on this planet. But for us to move forward, to keep moving and moving forward, we have to do it together - all together. Humanity has to fight our tribal mindset. We go to the same church? Cool, youre in my tribe. You speak my language? Youre in my tribe. Youre an NYU alumni? Youre in my tribe. You play Pokmon Go? Youre a vegetarian? You like the Yankees? You go to the gun range? Youre pro-choice? Tribe, tribe, tribe. But of course, its not the belonging part that is the problem, its the corollary You are part of my tribe, and they are not.Whether its race, gender, language, sexual orientation, religious or ethnic origin, or our beliefs and values themselves - diversity doesnt have to be a weakness. It can be our greatest strength. Now often, people talk about striving for tolerance. Now, dont get me wrong there are places in this world where a little more tolerance would go a long way, but if were being honest right here, right now, I think we can aim a little higher than mere tolerance.Think about it Saying I tolerate you actually means something like, Ok, I grudgingly admit that you have a right to exist, just dont get in my face about it, and oh, dont date my sister. Theres not a religion in the world that asks you to tolerate thy neighbor. So lets try for something a little more like acceptance, respect, friendship, and yes, even love. And why does this matter? Because, in our aspiration to relevance in our love for our families in our desire to contribute, to make this world a bet ter place, despite our differences, we are all the same. And when you meet and befriend someone from another country or another culture who speaks a different language or who worships differently, you quickly realize this. And heres my main point, and the challenge Im offering you today. Our celebration of difference needs to extend to differences of values and belief, too. Diversity includes political and cultural diversity. It includes a diversity of perspectives and approaches to solving problems. See, its far too easy, with social media shaping our interactions, to engage only with people with whom we already agree - members of our tribe. Well, this world is and must be bigger than that.So here is my request As you go forward from this place, I would like you to make a point of reaching out to people whose beliefs and values differ from your own. I would like you to listen to them, truly listen, and try to understand them, and find that common ground. You have a world of opportu nity at your fingertips. But as you go forward from here, understand that just around the corner, a whole different order of learning awaits, in which your teachers will come from every station in life, every education level, every belief system, every lifestyle. And I hope you will embrace that. You have been students, you will continue to learn all your lives, but now it is also time for you to become leaders. In every generation, leaders emerge because they one day awake to the realization that its not up to someone else to fix this problem, or take up that cause. Its up to them. So now is the time for you to lead.Leaders. Now, Im sure thats a word thats been tossed around you and at you quite a bit over the past few hours, days, weeks and years. Leaders of tomorrow. Leaders of today. But what does it mean? What attributes does a 21st century leader need to have? What do people need most from their leaders today and tomorrow? Now, I think you need to be brave. Really brave. And I know, when you think of courageous leaders, you think of those folks who stood implacably and fearlessly, anchored in their sense of rightness, willing to pit their ideals against all comers, against the slings and arrows aimed their way. Well, I dont think thats brave enough. I dont think thats good enough for what our shared future will ask of you. I actually dont think its ever been good enough.Let me tell you a bit about Wilfrid Laurier, a promising young lawyer at the end of the 19th century, who would go on to become my second-favorite Prime Minister. He was raised and educated as a proud, Catholic French-Canadian, an exemplary representative of one side of the two identities that had come together to found Canada just a few decades before. The two solitudes - the other half being English-speaking, Protestant, and fiercely loyal to the British Crown - accommodated each other, cooperated together, and generally put up with each other to build our country, but still felt all t oo well the divisions and fault lines that had led them through almost a millennium of tensions and wars between English and French. It was impressed upon young Wilfrid by his teachers and elders that he must stand up unflinchingly for the values and the identity of his heritage, those beliefs and approaches that were his birthright, and would be his legacy. That, they told him, was leadership. But Wilfrid grew to believe otherwise. He realized that its actually easy to stand rooted in the conviction that you are right, and either wait for others to come to you, or wait for your chance to impose your rightness on others. He saw that its actually harder to seek compromise, to dig deep into yourself, your ideas and convictions, honestly and rigorously, to see where you can give and where you do need to stand, while opening yourself up to the other point of view, to seek out and find that common ground. And that remains Wilfrid Lauriers political legacy, more than 100 years later. To le t yourself be vulnerable to another point of view - thats what takes true courage. To open yourself to anothers convictions, and risk being convinced, a little, or a lot, of the validity of their perspective. Now thats scary discovering that someone you vehemently disagree with might have a point. Might even be right. But it shouldnt be scary, or threatening. Particularly to all of you, who have worked so hard these past years to pursue truth, to learn, to grow. Being open to others is what has gradually led Canadians to the understanding that differences can and must be a source of strength, not of weakness. And I say gradually, because 20th century Canadian history is filled with counter-examples and terrible setbacks that we are still trying to remedy today, most notably the systemic marginalization and oppression of Indigenous Peoples. Were not perfect, of course, but that sense of openness, respect for other points of view, and acceptance of each other really does underpin our approach as we try to solve the great problems of our time. And not because were nice - but of course we are - but because by bringing together diverse perspectives, you get a much better shot at meeting those challenges. And thats how we come back to you and the leaders the world needs you to be.Leadership has always been about getting people to act in common cause. Were going to build a new country Were going to war Were going to the moon It usually required convincing, or coercing, a specific group to follow you. And the easiest way to do that has always been through tribal contrasts They believe in a different God They speak a different language They dont want the same things as we do. But the leadership we need most today and in the years to come is leadership that brings people together. That brings diversity to a common cause. This is the antithesis of the polarization, the aggressive nationalism, the identity politics that have grown so common of late. Its harder, of cours e. Its always been easier to divide than unite. But mostly, it requires true courage. Because if you want to bring people around to your way of thinking, you need to first show them that you are open to theirs. That you are willing to enter into a conversation that might change your mind. Show respect for their point of view, and you have a better chance of actually having them listen to yours. And regardless of what happens, you will have had a genuine exchange that focused on understanding, not on winning a debate or scoring points. And you will both be improved for it.Let me be very clear this is not an endorsement of moral relativism or a declaration that all points of view are valid. Female genital mutilation is wrong, no matter how many generations have practiced it. Anthropogenic climate change is real, no matter how much some folks want to deny it. But heres the question do you want to win an argument and feel good about how superior you are? Or do you actually want to chang e behaviors and beliefs? See, its been pointed out that one of the many differences between Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis was that Davis preferred to win a debate, while Lincoln would rather win the war. And thats the question Do you want to win an argument or do you want to change the world? With malice toward none, and charity toward all. Let those greatest words of this countrys greatest president guide your ambitions, your hopes for yourselves, your families, your country, your planet. There is no shortage of cynicism and selfishness in the world. Be their answer, their antidote. I am abundantly optimistic about the future because of you. It is yours to make and mold and shape. The world eagerly awaits, indeed requires, your ideas. Your initiative. Your enterprise. Your energy. Your passion and compassion. Your idealism, and your ambition. But remember that true courage is the essential ingredient in all your efforts.Congratulations, Class of 2018. Now go change the world.M erci.

How to Defend Yourself Against False Harassment Charges

How to Defend Yourself Against False Harassment ChargesHow to Defend Yourself Against False Harassment ChargesSexual harassment can cause a real zu gunsten vonblem at work. Sexual harassment comes notlage only in the form of quid pro quo (If you sleep with me, youll get the promotion), but in the form of inappropriate jokes, pornography on office computers, and touching someone who doesnt want to be touched, in a sexual or suggestive way. When an employee reports a claim of sexual harassment, the company is obligated to investigate. Normally that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the menschenfreundlich Resources department, but the investigation can be handled by an outside partie, frequently an attorney, if the company doesnt have a dedicated HR department or partie. Some companies will choose to bring in a consultant or an attorney, in any case, to investigate such a claim because of concerns about impartiality. This is also fairly standard if the accused is a senior manager because of the difficulty internal managers will have in doing a solid investigation. Depending on the seriousness of the accusation, a company may suspend the accused person from work until the investigation is complete. All of these actions are normal and how an investigation should proceed. The best course of action if youre guilty of sexually harassinga coworker is to confess, apologize, promise never to do it again, and hope you dont get fired. But, what if youre not guilty? False accusations do happen and it could be two completely different perspectives about what actually did happen. If you are wrongly accused, here is what you need to do. Cooperate With the Investigation Because youre innocent, instinctively your first reaction may be to push back and stonewall the investigation. It may be that the person who accused you is a competitive person determined to destroy your career because theyre vying for your job. They may also be seeking publicity or notoriety. While th ese issues are possible, you should still cooperate with the investigation You need to cooperate because theyre going to investigate with you or without you. You want your side of the story on the record and you want to clear your name. You also want to provide your list of witnesses, especially if your accuser is a horrible person, you dont want the witness list to consist of your enemies. You need the witness list to contain the names of friends and colleagues who can back up your side of the story. Confess What You Did Do Wrong Some sexual harassment claims come after a ?breakup of what was a consensual sexual relationship. If your company has a policy against bosses dating reporting staffor coworkers dating and you did have a sexual relationship with your accuser, dont lie about it. Eventually, management will findout so just confess that you dated and explain for how long. Will they still fire you for breaking the rules? Maybe, but youshould have been aware of that when you started the relationship. Additionally, you want to get your name cleared- its far better to be fired for breaking the rules then for committing sexual harassment. If a coworker walked past your cubicle and saw naked women on your computer screen, its likely the IT department already knows about itso lying wont help your case In fact, they probably already had IT look into this before they spoke with you. The key here is to confess what you did wrong. Yes, I viewed pornography on my company laptop, but I only did it at home. If you look at the time stamps, youll see that what Jane is complaining about couldnt have happened at work. Apologize, Even If You Are Innocent Your joke wasnt inappropriate its just that a coworker who is incredibly thin-skinned thought it was. If this is the case apologize anyway. You werent looking somewhere other than into a colleagues eyes. Apologize anyway. Why? Because sexual harassment law dictates this. It doesnt say, you cant tell dirty jokes, pi nch someones behind, or have sex with your assistant. What it does say is, you cant do any of these things if they are unwanted and the person is offended, and a reasonable person would be offended. For the behavior to be considered sexual harassment, the behavior must exhibit all three of these conditions. The problem is, you dont always know what is unwanted until you carry out the behavior. So, apologize and make a mental note that this person is a lot more sensitive than the average person. Let that guide your future interactions. Hire an Attorney This is not always necessary. Most of the time, the truth will come out rather rapidly, and the investigation will clear up the charges. However this doesnt always happen, and if the accusations are serious, you could lose your job and your reputation over this accusal. When the HR department investigates the claim, they arent required to do so according to criminal court rules. There isnt an impartial jury or a judge that rules on evidence as admissible or inadmissible. They have a legal obligation to conduct a fair investigation but they arent required to conduct a perfect one. If the accusation is serious enough that you could lose your job over it, you may wish to hire an attorney. If you do, its critical that the attorney is one who focuses on employment law, particularly employee-side employment law. This isnt something that just any lawyer can do. Employment law is complex, and if youre going to hire an attorney, you want a specialist. (www.Nela.orgcan refer you to an employment attorney in your area.) This option costs money, of course, and youll have to pay out of your own pocket. Regardless, the cost should be less than the cost of losing your job. Your attorney will know the specific laws in your state or country. He or she will guide you through the process. What Happens When the Investigation Is Over? If the investigation finds you responsible, youll receive some sort of punishment. The punish ment can range from a stern, Do not do this again, to the termination of your employment. If you believe the termination is unfair and unfounded, youll want your attorney to negotiate an exit from the company. Its possible if you are found guilty of sexual harassment that you can still get a severance package and make an agreement that they will provide you with a neutral reference. If the investigation finds that you are not at fault, the accuser could get anything from a were sorry about the misunderstanding, but what you experienced was not sexual harassment, to a stern do not do this again. If egregious, the accuser could even find their employment terminated. Yes, companies can fire you for making false claims. If both of you remain at the company, you may wish not to work near this person. You can certainly ?ask for a transfer, but your managers may tell you to act like an adult and deal with this situation. If you think this proximity is too difficult for you to handle, by al l means, start looking for a new job and leave your employment. The last thing you want is for this sexual harassment charge to haunt you for the rest of your life. Moving on seems unfair, especially if you are the innocent party, but sometimes its the best solution to a bad situation. - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources.
